If ss stands for super-sport then you cannot afford the insurance. Might want to look into estimates for parallel twins: GS500E, EX500R, GS500F, CB600F, EX650R; or even better, v-twins: SV650, SV650S. But if you insist on an in-line four like CBR, YZF, ZX, GSXR, then look for one that is 7-10 years older.

Best place to look is a local, independent agent, who can tell you not only which major medical policy in your area is most competitive and has lots of providers, but who can explain the coverages. If you take on a $5,000 deductible, it should run you around $300 – $400 a month for the both of you. AND, depending on your state laws, it might not cover motorcycle accident injuries.

Buy a second-hand Japanese dual-purpose bike of no more than 250cc. Ride it for at least a year, then sell it for almost what you paid for it and trade up to what you really want. See link for more details

As I tell everyone – you do not really know what your riding style is if you have never ridden. I had to go through 2 motorcycles to finally purchase my 3rd one which is a '08 Triumph Bonneville and now I know for sure that this motorcycle was made for me. The classic looks, the handling, the size, the style, the riding position – everything is perfect

You are pretty tall and heavy so I would not get a bike that has an engine of less than 600cc.

Do not get a brand new bike and do not pay too much for it.

Be careful because a 600cc motor is pretty powerful so do not push it too much because you are at a beginner level and might have trouble with sudden stops or cornering at high speed or something happens and you have to suddenly break.

Didn't have much of a car, eh? A bike makes economic sense only if it is in lieu of a car. In addition to a car and the savings will not pay off the cost of the bike.

$500 down is more than enough. Depending on your transportation needs you could be on the road with a new motorcycle for under $4,000. A little 250cc cruiser (Honda Rebel, Suzuki GZ250, Yamaha -Star 250) will outrun most cars in the city, will get upto 70-75 mph so they can run on the freeway, get about 60 mpg city riding.

Get something bigger. A 250 is a bit small and underpowered for freeway. Get a 500 or 600. On a 250 you only have one option if something goes wrong. BREAK!! There's not enough power left to go faster to avoid being run over. You can always run the larger bikes slower and keep the RPM's down to save on gas. You won't but it is possible. Also running a 250 on the freeway will kill any kind of MPG advantage it has because you will be running it at too high RPM to be effective. I thought the same thing when I got a 250. Ringing its neck at 70mph for 25miles both ways was getting me around 40mpg. Got a nighthawk 750 and it gets 43mpg on the freeway and that's flogging it because the bike is still new to me and that acceleration is irresistible.

BTW: I have herd of someone getting 63mpg on the CB750 nighthawk but he was keeping the rpm's down and not riding fast. It all comes down to self control.
