Choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers… choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked-up brats you spawned to replace yourself. the book is good…that is reason enough to read it. if you're interested in screenplay writing then you should read both to gain an understanding of how to adapt materials to film…the book is different from the movie.

I cant confirm the novel, but in the original script Rents gave Spud some of the money as he was leaving the hotel room.
Here is from the movie as Rents was reflecting on his betrayal, mentioning that he didnt care about Begbie, and Sickboy would have done the same but ,"Spud, well, OK, I felt sorry for Spud — he never hurt anybody".
It is sort of an unsaid thing, but Rents could have easily mailed Spud a note and the key to the deposit box.
